ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMME (AEP)
Arts Education Programme (AEP) for Schools devised by the National Arts Council with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education

Art Education Programmes or AEP's are of three kinds:

Arts Exposure : This programme introduces students to a particular art form.They are approximately 30 to 40 min.long and are presented in the form of a performance (usually accompanied by an explanation about the backround and development of the art form ) or a talk-cum-domonstration session.

Art Experience : This programme goes one step further by providing opportunities for students to participate in the various art forms.These are suitable for smaller groups. They are designed to be interactive and to help build students confidence,skills and expand their capacity for creative thinking.

Art Excursion: An environment totally different from a classroom setting helps to increase students interest in learning. Art Excursions bring students to formal arts venues, so they can visit museums,art centers, theatres and participate in outdoor art events.With Arts Excursions, students can visit artists' studios or rehearsal space to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the work, attend performances and a chance to talk to the artists involved.

Nrityalaya Aesthetic Society offers these three categories to Institutions to choose from.For Art Excursion, students can visit their branch at 19 Kerbau Road ,Little India and Browse around the Art Gallery as well as watch a master class (Dance/Music) and participate in the class.

Bharatha Natyam

The Bharatha Natyam is the oldest and most popular of all the many forms of classical Indian dance forms. It combines rhythmic movements, intricate hand gestures and complex footwork to convey a variety of messages and emotions; even the eyes, neck, arms, and legs have to work in unison to effectively communicate with an audience.

This programme will consist of performances and a lecture, and is designed so that both Indian and non-Indian members will gain an insight into this unique art form.

The Rhythmic Experience

The rhythm plays an important part in Indian classical dance and music.

This programme provides an insight as to how a dancer uses the rhythm to motivate his/her movement, correlating to the music and connecting with students the intricate hand gestures and complicated footwork.

A demonstration will be given to show how the musical instruments are used in the creation of the rhythm. Students will learn how to configure the rhythms into classical Indian dance and music.

SAMPOORNA NATYAM (TOTAL THEATRE)

Indian Threatre is a combition of music of music, dance,acting and lyrical dialogue. This was propounded some two thousand years ago in the Natya Shastra by the founder of the Bharata Natyam dance form, Bharata. During this programme you will enjoy a short dance drama "Crocodile Tears" taken from Pancha Tantra, a chain sstory by Vishnu Sharma to educate the foolish princes of an ancient Indian Kingdom.It describe how a clever monkey outmarts a wicked crocodile.The crocodile calls his friend to travel on his back for a feast in his house.His intention is to kill and eat the heart of the monkey.But the monkey outmarts him and escapes.Here you will be treated to a performance of dynamic dance, subtle emotions, melodious music and good acting. Dialogue is in English.

SANGEETA SAMMELANAM

The new ensemble, "Sangeeta Sammelanam" meaning musical congregation, consists entirely of music teachers from the group.There are 1 Sitar, 1 Veena, 1 Violin,1 Mrirdangam, 1Tabla, 1 Flute, 1Vocal and 1 Harmonium.The member include longtime resident musicians of the group as wella as virtuosos from India who have joined more recently.The musicians will also play other instruments and drums to compliment the performance.Vocal music,the basis of Indian musical insturments and the solfa system will also be demonstrated and explained at the pre performance talk. The convert will begin with a south Indian segment of Carnatic music,followed by a north segment of Hindustani music. There will then be a Jugal Bandhi or musical dialogue, between the sout hern and northern styles.An additional highlight of the performance will be the dialouge and competitive performance of various drums.

CULTURAL IMMERSION

Litrature is the visible basis of all culture. Indian Literature and various arts are the expressions of emotions .Nine such "Rasas"(Aesthetic Experiences) are the result of practicing arts.

In this programme experts will discuss and demonstrate Indian Literature, music,dance and visual arts in simple English to get a deeper understanding of Indian theatre which is a combination of litereture, body language,expression and visual art. During this session students will be shown and explained about 30 painting and art works by top artists of India exhibited at the Bhaskar's Arts Academy Gallery, 19 Kerbau Road in Little India or at Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society, Stamford Arts Centre,155 Waterloo Street.Hand on service is service is also available.Experts on various Indian art forms will stand by to explain and answer questions.40 students and teachers accompanying will be treated to a vegetarian lunch or refreshments.

KATHAKALI

This form of dance is the story play of Kerala in South India. With a colourful makeup, rhythmic body movements and intricate eye movements, this dance programme enables students to obtain a good grasp of the similarities between Kathakali and Chinese Opera and Japanese Noh dance. Besides being entertained, students will discover how artists skillfully use their expressive eyes and body parts to artistically convey the messages and emotions.
